Frequently Asked Questions

What is a WPI-8, and why do I need one?

A WPI-8 is a Certificate of Compliance issued by the Texas Department of Insurance confirming a structure meets windstorm building code requirements. Coastal properties must hold this certification to be eligible for windstorm and hail coverage through TWIA.

A WPI-8 covers new construction inspected during the build. A WPI-8E is for existing structures certified after the fact, requiring a signed WPI-2E application and supporting documentation submitted through TDI’s Windstorm Inspection Program.

Inspections can be performed either by a TDI inspector directly or by an appointed, qualified inspector including Texas-licensed professional engineers appointed through TDI’s program.

Once approved, TDI issues your WPI-8 Certificate of Compliance, which you’ll provide to your insurance agent as proof of eligibility for TWIA coverage. You can also look up and print certificates directly through TDI’s certificate search tool.

Common items include exterior wall coverings, roof coverings, roof vents and turbines, skylights, windows, entry doors, garage doors, shutters, mechanical equipment, air conditioner units, and solar panels. A full list is available on TDI’s website.
